schiele’s portraits of a deceased gustav klimt. incredible, fast sketches done in the morgue, after his death. they were originally sketched horizontally, but turned and presented vertically for added interest and humanisation. i know i can associate better with the upright faces better, processing the pain. the other thing i love about these is that they are the perfect example (in subject matter and construction) of schiele’s unique ideas of truth through imperfection, visible through the distortions in his work throughout his artistic life. the “mis-drawn” nose in the second one is not erased, and instead there are two nose-profiles. he did not erase in his drawings, believing there were no true mistakes, cherishing the state of impression and ironically adding life to the dead figure. egon schiele is one of my favourite artists, it’s a true shame that he died so young.
